"I like my money right where I can see it: hanging in my closet." - Carrie Bradshaw (Sex and the City)
It's not about the outfit; it's the peg it hangs on. (Meaning you)!
It's vital for most of us to feel that we look relatively trendy without seeming like we're trying too hard. Choosing our wardrobe staples involves making decisions that balance style, comfort, and confidence. In doing this, we should keep in mind:
Body Shape and Fit: Knowing our body shape and choosing outfits to complement it is vital to enhancing our overall appearance and boosting confidence levels.
Comfort and Functionality: Finding items that are comfortable and look good can sometimes seem impossible. Opt for fabrics that feel good against your skin but are still practical for your lifestyle.
Quality Over Quantity: Most of us now are in a position where we can invest in better quality clothing that will last longer. Gone are the days of rummaging around market stalls or fighting over the last pair of flares on the rails in Chelsea Girl, Etam or Dotty Perkins (although I must admit, I still enjoy finding a good bargain or two).
Colours: Find colours and textures that work well with your skin and hair tone. More neutral colours are easier to mix and match, while bold, bright tones can often make a complexion look washed-out and dull.
Balance Trends and Timelessness: As dreary as it may sound, classic pieces are far easier to mix with other items in our wardrobe and often complement rather than show off shapes.
A Tailored Look: Never underestimate the power of a well-fitted outfit.
Good quality underwear: It may not be on show-but we know it's there. It can make or break an outfit (not to mention our self-esteem), so always wear the best quality and fit you can find for a confident glow that only you know about.
Accessories: Who can resist a great handbag? Not to mention that perfect scarf/belt or pair of earrings.
Adapt to Lifestyle Changes: As our lives change (retirement, becoming a grandparent or starting a new business), our wardrobe often needs to adapt along with it. Try to find outfits that suit your daily activities as well as those for more special occasions.
Shoes and Boots: I hate to admit it, but my days of wearing heels for 16 hours a day are long gone now. That doesn't mean to say I don't appreciate a nice pair of shoes or a funky, chunky boot anymore, though. In fact, my favourites are still my neon orange pumps (with matching handbag) that make an appearance every so often to remind the world that there is still a rebel hidden in there somewhere (until they get swapped for my pink fluffy slippers, that is!).
Confidence and Personal Taste: Ultimately, we should wear what makes us feel good. Our clothing is an extension of our personality, and we should never be afraid to show it to the world (with the possible exception of Lycra tracksuits and leather hot pants for men!!!).
Generally, if we stick to classic pieces and add chic accessories to stay up to date (oh my God, that sounds like something my mum would say!!), we cannot go far wrong. It's always a good idea to consider a change of haircut or colour, try a new make-up style, or treat yourself to something special to feel more confident and fulfilled.
Here are a few other things you might want to consider when looking at your wardrobe:
- Opt for more dainty jewellery – big statement pieces can make an outfit stand out from the crowd (and not always in the way you want it to). Err on the side of minimalism.
- Get yourself a good bag – accessories are fun, and a good bag can transform an outfit. If you don't deserve one by now, you never will. Just tell yourself it's an investment if you need any more persuading.
- Don't be afraid of a bit of colour – this is not the time to hide away. You're an amazing woman. Be seen to shine!
- Find the right jeans – jeans are so versatile. Dress up or dress down. Either way, make sure they are a good fit.
- Have a go-to pair of heels – make sure they're a staple that makes a statement.
- Choose where you want the most attention – if you feel more conservative about one part of your body, compensate by highlighting an area you like.
- Use textures to guide attention – most women are worried about their arms and stomach. Use draping and soft fabrics to help mask these areas.
- Define your waist – oversized items can be difficult to pull off. Define your waist for a more flattering look.
- Make sure you're wearing the right bra size – go for a fitting and get measured properly. It makes all the difference to how your clothes will look and how you feel. Except for a few, going bra-less in public is always a no-no.
