Face & Skin Care Advice for Women Over 50

Menopause can really knock the stuffing out of our confidence and self-esteem, no doubt about it. When we are feeling at our absolute worse, a quick look in the bathroom mirror or checking out a dreaded ‘Selfie’ can really be a kick in the teeth.

One of the first areas we tend to notice ageing is on our Face. Why is that?

During menopause our oestrogen levels decrease leading to dehydration, thinner skin (especially around the eyes) and fine lines and wrinkles appear due to loss of collagen. But menopause alone is not to blame.

The outer layer of the skin (the epidermis) thins as we age, making us more susceptible to experiencing damage from the sun and UV rays. If you are not using an SPF every day (regardless of whether you are in sun or not) you are simply choosing to ignore this problem.

As we age, our face naturally loses its youthful glow. That gorgeous plumpness that we all took for granted at 18 (and now look longingly at in our old school photographs), starts to disappear as the subcutaneous fat layer diminishes. (Wouldn’t you know it, the one area where we would like the fat to stay for longer and it simply refuses to)! This is when we start to notice a hollowing appearance under the cheek bones and wrinkles appear deeper around the mouth, at the sides of the face and across the forehead. (Have I depressed you enough yet?).

If not, there is another reason that fine lines begin to appear with age. The levels of hyaluronic acid start dropping off, resulting in the skin losing some of its moisture and suppleness. And, in case, all of that hasn’t sent you running for the mirror and the wine simultaneously, the skins cell renewal rate slows down, melanin production drops off and age spots/uneven pigmentation appear out of nowhere.

Don’t panic-all is not lost. We are lucky enough to live in an age when huge scientific advances are being made constantly in attempts to delay the impact of aging on our skin. Daily skin care routines using anti-aging product ranges that include ingredients like antioxidants, retinols and hyaluronic acid, all work towards maintaining a healthy skin if used as directed.
